Reversing Cavities

You might think it’s a myth, but it really is possible to reverse cavities! At Smile Blue Ridge, we pride ourselves on minimally invasive dentistry.

Our goal is to be as conservative as possible, and to only do work that is absolutely necessary. We offer products that contain xylitol and fluoride, which both work to strengthen teeth and reverse cavities. They’re offered in different forms, including rinses, gums, candies, and toothpastes. We can help address your cavity risks and provide recommendations for products that are effective for your needs.

Tooth decay is usually caused by acid breaking down the outer part of the tooth, called enamel. Eventually this decay reaches a deeper layer of the tooth, called dentin. These acids come from different acidic foods and beverages, as well as byproduct from certain bacterias from sugar. Fluoride, which is an ingredient in many toothpastes and is also in tap water, is toxic to acid-producing bacteria. Xylitol is a natural sugar substitute, and is also toxic to those bacteria. Both these ingredients help to harden the areas of the teeth where decay has started.
