The three most common ways to fill in the space of a missing tooth are:
- Partial denture or removable appliance – These can be a cost effective ways to replace multiple missing teeth in a row.
- Fixed bridge – Our age old solution to a single tooth or multiple missing teeth bordered by other existing teeth. A bridge requires teeth on either side of the space to function as the ‘pillars’ of the bridge. The ‘pontic’ or porcelain tooth is fused to the ‘pillars’ or abutment teeth which creates the bridge. Even if they are healthy, the two abutment teeth will be crowned.
- Dental implant(s) – This is when a titanium post that acts as a tooth root is implanted into the jawbone and a replacement tooth is added. The key advantage to this procedure is that healthy neighboring teeth do not require additional dentistry.
